Residents in two communities dealt with flooding throughout Friday.
Emergency crews had to block off some roads in the towns of Coalport and Westover due to the rushing water.
Coalport has declared an emergency disaster and officials announced a voluntary evacuation because of the heavy flood waters. The entire Main Street is closed off to drivers, and borough officials ask that people stay away until flooding subsides.
Westover has also declared an emergency disaster.
According to Coalport’s EMA Coordinator, the recent flooding was instant and officials from both boroughs have been dealing with flooded roads and homes.
Residents are asked to take extra precautions during the clean-up.
“Like I said we’re pumping, we’re cleaning. People need to remember that these flood waters, it could have contaminates in it…. so make sure you disinfect everything you have,” Jack Liang, Coalport’s EMA coordinator, said.
Caution tape is surrounding several businesses that were flooded by the water.
We’re told that at least 20 businesses are facing damage.
PennDot is also helping local fire departments, to help clear the roads of mud and gravel.
In Westover, Bridge Street was filled completely by water and overflowed into nearby yards and homes.
The Westover fire chief said they’ve been pumping out basements since 9:30 a.m.
“Other than pumping basements, we’ve provided traffic control to keep anybody from going through the flooded roadways,” Fire Chief Jason Sunderland said. “You don’t know what’s under the murky waters, so as the saying goes… turn around, don’t drown.”

Saint Basils Social Hall in Coalport also has clean-up kits for residents cleaning up after the flood.
