UGI is reminding consumers to be aware of utility imposters and phone scams.

UGI has received a number of reports of people who are posing as employees and ranged from going door-to-door trying to gain access to homes, to customers receiving phone calls that try to collect a payment.

Residents should always check for proper identification before letting them into their home. All UGI employees will have photo IDs that show the company logo, along with their name, photo, and employee number.

UGI wants their customers to feel safe when they visit their homes to perform utility services.

To help protect against imposters, UGI wants all customers to remember the following safety information:

• UGI does not usually do any work unannounced late in the evening, except for a customer-requested appointment or a legitimate gas emergency. They also do not do meter reading work late in the evening.

• Legitimate UGI meter readers, collectors, and service representatives wear blue uniforms with a UGI logo and drive marked, numbered cars.

• Most service work is performed on a pre-scheduled basis, with the exception of leak and corrosion surveys.

• Meter reading is performed on a scheduled date that is outlined in customer’s monthly bill, which is typically between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

• Always ask to see proper ID before allowing anyone into your house. If you have any suspicions or concerns, call UGI immediately and they can verify the visit.

UGI also warns of scammers using emails or phone calls to tell customer that they owe money for their energy bills and that without paying, they could lose their services.

These phone calls are not coming from UGI or an employee from the company, and this would not be how they would follow up if a customer is not current on their account.
