PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man who was shot in the face while driving in Philadelphia remains hospitalized in critical condition.

City police say the 28-year-old man was shot around 11 p.m. Monday. He was traveling behind a vehicle driven by his wife when he was shot.

Authorities say the couple had both left from the same location a short time before two shots were fired at the man’s car. One shot shattered the driver’s side window and struck him in the cheek, while the other lodged in his throat area.

Witnesses say the man then opened his door and fell to the ground, where other drivers and passers-by provided aid before emergency responders arrived.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
