UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Angel Rondon produced a solid outing on the mound for the State College Spikes, but Luis Oviedo threw seven scoreless innings for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to deal the Spikes a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
While there were no long blasts during the game with just one extra-base hit for each side, the crowd at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park did see David “The Bullet” Smith, Jr. blast into the sky as the Human Cannonball after the game in a show presented by Boyles Insurance and HAPPY 103, followed a preview of the Fourth of July with a fantastic FIREWORKS show presented by the PA Lottery.
Rondon (0-3) took the loss despite yielding just two runs on six hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander also matched his season high for strikeouts with seven whiffs on the night.
Oviedo (3-0), the two-time defending New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week, was equal to the task, though. The righty held the Spikes (6-12) to four hits over his seven innings on the hill while also striking out seven batters for his third straight win.
Mahoning Valley (13-4) scored the lone runs of the game when Ronny Dominguez drew a two-out walk and moved to third on Gabriel Mejia’s single. After Mejia stole second, Jose Fermin brought both runners home with a single to center field.
State College’s best scoring chance came in the fourth after Edwin Figuera tripled to left-center field with one out. However, Figuera was thrown out at home by left fielder Hosea Nelsonafter a flyout to complete an inning-ending double play.
Kevin Hamann and Jacob Schlesener combined to provide 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief for State College, and helped the Spikes strike out 13 batters as a staff.
Luis Araujo (1) allowed one hits over two scoreless innings to finish the game for Mahoning Valley and notch the save. Araujo recorded one strikeout.
FIguera was the lone Spike with multiple hits, while Fermin produced the only multi-hit game for the Scrappers.
