Penn State fans have gotten a glimpse of the future.
The Nittany Lions’ new offense with first-year coordinator Joe Moorhead is already rolling after only 15 spring practices.
“It’s always kind of fun when you go in, you have a plan, and you see it kind, you plant the seeds, you see it take root and kind of come to fruition,” Moorhead says. “I think that’s been the fun part.”
Quarterback Trace McSorley ran the up-tempo, no-huddle offense to perfection in the Blue-White game.
The redshirt sophomore completed all but one pass in the first half and finished the game with four touchdowns.
“We pushed the tempo but there’s definitely opportunities where we could push it a little faster,” McSorley says.
On top of the speed, the new offense includes a heavy dose of run-pass options – packaged plays where the QB chooses between a hand-off or a throw after the snap.
“A defense is going to be on their heels the entire time and whether the tempo is getting them or putting them in binds with making one guy choose between covering the run or covering the pass, that’s a huge benefit to us as an offense,” McSorley says.
The Nittany Lions’ top offense threw twice as often as it ran in the Blue-White game.
But based on Moorhead’s history, that ratio will be a lot more balanced come fall.
