When Penn State hosted its pro day, the usual suspects were there. Most NFL experts anticipate names like Christian Hackenberg, Austin Johnson, and Carl Nassib, just to name a few, to be called in this year’s draft. But, there were also some underdogs showing the scouts and coaches what they’re capable of on the field.
One being Bald Eagle Area grad Jon Gingrich, who’s been mostly known for his wrestling in his college days at PSU, than his time on the grid iron.
Gingrich started training for his pro day six months ago, after being away from the game for a few years.
He knew that he was in his prime, so he gave it a shot.
“I’m open to playing anything, special teams, offense, and defense,” said Gingrich. “Originally I was looking at offensive line and gaining weight in the 280’s and then talked to some people and maybe go down to tight-end but coming into this I’d be doing tight-end drills. Earlier this week I found out I’d be doing defensive end drills so I just had to kind of change on the fly and get ready for it.”
Gingrich said he’d wait to hire an agent depending on the feedback and interest level from league teams.
