The original Naked palette hasn’t been available since 2018

I hesitate to admit it, but I’m pretty sure I’ve had my Urban Decay Original Naked palette for well over a decade. Although it’s typically advised to toss an eyeshadow palette one to two years after you open it, I’ve never been able to part with the cult-favorite palette, especially after it became discontinued in 2018.

Now though, it might finally be time for me to toss old faithful, since Urban Decay just announced it’s re-releasing the iconic product for a limited time starting Aug. 4 at Ulta Beauty and Ulta.com, allowing me to restock on the coveted makeup item for the first time in six years. But time is of the essence: Once the palettes are sold out, they’ll be gone from shelves yet again.

Why the Urban Decay original Naked palette is so iconic

In the age of TikTok, there seems to be a new viral beauty product popping up almost daily. Still, very few cosmetics are able to sustain that level of hype in the long term, let alone for well over two decades. The Urban Decay Cosmetics Original Naked Eyeshadow Palette first launched in 2010 (long before any of us were turning to TikTok influencers to guide our product purchases) and it quickly rose to cult status thanks to a slew of YouTube tutorials and magazine coverage.

In the eight years the palette remained on shelves, more than 30 million pieces were sold amassing more than $1 billion in sales. The success helped launch various new iterations of the Naked palette over the years, including the Urban Decay Cosmetics Naked Heat Eyeshadow Palette and the Urban Decay Cosmetics Naked3 Soft Pink Eyeshadow Palette. Even after the coveted palette was taken off shelves in August 2018, many of us (raises hand) continued to keep ours in steady rotation since it’s just too good to part with (even if some suspicious bacteria may or may not be building up).

So what’s so special about the OG product that started all the hype? With 12 eyeshadow pans in its case, the original Naked palette redefines neutral eyeshadow beyond just basic tans and browns. Its 12 hues — ranging from a cool cream beige to a glittering black — are designed to flatter all skin tones and eye colors, creating a new arsenal of neutrals for everyone. Plus, the colors are designed to be mixed and matched with each other in an infinite number of combinations to create natural, everyday looks to dark, bold smoky eyes.

If you’ve tried a range of eyeshadow palettes including Urban Decay’s offerings, you’re well away that Urban Decay makes some of the highest-quality formulas on the market. The highly pigmented eyeshadows blend perfectly for easy shaping, contouring and defining of the eyes. The palette offers the perfect mix of smooth mattes, radiant shimmers and sparkling metallics that are suited for makeup beginners and pros alike.

What to know about the re-released Naked palette

There are some subtle yet impactful changes to the relaunched palette, but first, let’s review what’s the same: All 12 of the original hues are back:

  • Virgin: cool cream beige, satin finish
  • Sin: champagne, shimmer finish
  • Naked: neutral beige, matte finish
  • Sidecar: rose gold, metallic finish
  • Buck: neutral medium brown, matte finish
  • Half Baked: light gold, shimmer finish
  • Smog: bronze, metallic finish
  • Darkhorse: dark brown, shimmer finish
  • Toasted: rosy taupe, shimmer finish
  • Hustle: dark taupe, satin finish
  • Creep: black with silver glitter, satin finish
  • Gunmetal: cool gray, metallic finish

The shadows also have an updated vegan formula (they were formerly cruelty-free) making them creamier in texture and easier to blend. The new formula is said to promote longer wear without creasing or fading. Also, the relaunched palette’s mirror is slightly longer and the dual-ended brush is updated with a cruelty-free design.

Whether you’re looking to refresh your expired favorite palette (like me), or if you want to get in on the beloved makeup staple for the first time, don’t wait: It’s only in stock for a limited time until supplies run out, and then it may be gone again forever.
