Painting an escape

The Winkler Gallery of Fine Arts opened its doors in December of 2003. Operating in a co-op format, it currently represents thirteen artists and offers original water colors, stained glass, photography, and so much more in Dubois.

An artist and one of the co-owners, Perry Winkler said, “Dubois was in need of some cultural programs. It would be also a great venue for artist to bring in their works and exhibit and offer courses.”

With so much space, and so many local artists displaying their work, there is something for everyone see and admire. One artist, Steve Hindman, uses many different techniques to create his work. Sometimes you can catch him in the gallery working on his next piece, but what’s even more surprising is how he starts each piece.

Hindman said, “it starts with a mathmatical grid basically. You divide that grid with lines which we call breaks.”

Hindman’s work uses mathmatics and celtic knots to make intricate and beautiful patterns that almost look three dimensional. Fellow artist, Anthony Gomes, takes a less structured approach to his art. He has created all kinds of pieces, from paintings, to using the same type of marble Micholangelo used on the Statue of David.

Each artist and work of art has a story. The great thing about the Winkler Gallery is that everytime you go there, an artist is present and willing to share that story with you, and also their love and passion for their work.

Winkler told us, “because, it is so different, and it is a bit of an escape from the typical hustle bustle every day issues and work. So, people are able to come up here and, sort of, escape the beautiful imagery. It’s almost like a little mini vacation.”

All the artist’s work is for sale at the gallery, but the best part is you can go and escape and admire the art work for free.

The Winkler Gallery of Fine Art in Dubois is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
