Hobby store for all ages

Maybe it has something to do with the new super hero movies on the big screen, but it seems that comic books are more popular than ever.

Main Street Hobby opened two years ago in the Moxham neighborhood of Johnstown, In May, the owners of the collectibles store jumped at an opportunity to move into Johnstown’s Central Business District.

“It’s mostly collectibles, sports and a lot of nerd. A lot of nerd,” laughed co-owner Josh Miller.

The collection is pretty impressive. One wall is filled with boxes of comic books and classic movies. You will also find Star Wars figures, yes they are mint in box.

There is even memorabilia from classic television shows Chips and Charlie’s Angels.  There is truly something for people of all ages.

“People just walk in and they stop for a second. There is a lot to take in,” said Miller.

One of the more unique displays is a collection of baseball cards, autographs, and other items documenting the Johnstown area athletes who made it to the professional level.

They include the likes of Jeff Hostetler, Pete Vuckovich, Artrell Hawkins, and Larod Stephens Howling.

Greater Johnstown High School football coach Tony Penna, Jr., who is a co-owner of the hobby shop, came up with the idea.

“He’s always had a soft spot for local athletes. They’ve paved the way for so many opportunities that a lot of our local athletes get,” said Miller. “He just wanted to do something to pay tribute to them.”

There is also a lot of Black and Gold merchandise. Autographs from the Steelers of the 1970’s as well as today’s stars.

Last week, Dwayne Woodruff (’79 Super Bowl Champion) paid a visit to the shop.

You can also find some old Johnstown Chiefs merchandise.

Miller says business has been great and they are very happy with their move to the downtown area.
