The State Health Department is reporting the first 2 cases of the Zika virus in Pennsylvania. Health officials say CDC laboratories confirmed the illness in 2 females who traveled to countries where the outbreak is occurring.

State Health Secretary Dr. Karen Murphy says the 2 cases pose no threat to the public. The virus has been linked to severe,  birth defects in babies whose mothers were bitten by an infected mosquito, in Latin America.

Health experts say the Zika virus is  generally a mild illness and most people infected have no symptoms. The illness causes flu-like symptoms include fever, rash, muscle and joint pain, and headache.
