SPRING MILLS, CENTRE COUNTY – One local community has been looking for a space for kids to go for after school activities and now, after years of searching, that dream is becoming a reality.
The building at One West Streamside Place in Spring Mills used to house a pharmaceutical company, but has sat vacant for ten years, until now. By the end of this year, the space will be a new programming center.
The 13,400 square foot building is the answer Howard Long has been looking for.
“Penns Valley was determined in our strategic plans as one of the outlying areas that we knew there was a need,” Long, President/CEO for YMCA of Centre County, said.
The building is about three miles from the Penns Valley Elementary and High Schools.
It will be gutted and transformed into the YMCA’s newest programming center, with a fitness center, kids playroom, preschool and after school program room, as well as an aerobics studio. The space will also be equipped with a kitchen and locker rooms.
“We believe that it’s going to give this community the opportunity to have programs and services that they have to travel a greater distance either into Bellefonte or into State College and now, they’re going to have this is their backyard,” Long said.
Penns Valley Area School District Superintendent Brian Griffith is encouraged and thinks this space will have a big impact on the community.
“I welcome it and I think this community will embrace it,” he said. “Our students will be able to go there for after school activities. They’ll be able to go there for child care, they’ll be able to go for summer camps and it will also serve as a venue to allow our youth sports programs to more fully develop.”
Construction on the space will begin this month and a soft opening is expected for December.
