A DuBois woman who won the Cash 5 jackpot says she’s already visited a financial advisor.
We have more on her reaction to her newfound wealth.
The winner says it was hard to believe she hit the jackpot, and even now it’s still sinking in.
“I am just sort of relaxing and trying to get my head straight yet,” says jackpot winner Janet Kupko.
The numbers 8, 12, 13, 28, and 35 didn’t mean much to Kupko until a few weeks ago, when she realized she’d won a $450,000 lottery jackpot.
“That day, I really didn’t need to stop at Sheetz, but I thought, eh, I’ll stop and get a ticket. I don’t know why,” says Kupko. “When I went in, they were very busy at the counter, so I thought they have that machine and I went over to the machine and put a dollar in.”
The next day, she checked the PA Lottery website, and found a big surprise.
“I checked it about 10 times before I actually believed it!” says Kupko.
Kupko says after spending 26 years at the DuBois hospital, she went back to nursing at the DuBois Village in her semi-retirement.
“I already resigned! It was getting hard working, even though I only did five days in a pay period,” says Kupko.
“I didn’t come to borrow money and she knows it, because we’ve known each other forever and I couldn’t wait to hug you and congratulate you!” says friend Marilyn Baird.
Kupko, 70, says she wishes her late husband could be here to see this, adding they’d worked hard to re-model a home. She says 25-percent of the June 21 jackpot will go to taxes.
“It’ll still be a nice chunk of change to retire on, and do some special stuff with my kids, and my grandchildren,” says Kupko.
And it’s all thanks to grandma’s lucky quick-pick ticket.
“They say to hit the lottery, you could get hit with lightning first, so I’m glad i hit the lottery instead of having the lightning!” says Kupko.
Kupko says she just finished her part-time job yesterday and she’s looking forward to a happy retirement.
