Cleanup from the last snow storm depleted some of Bedford County’s funding but some of its municipalities are faring well in balancing budgets.
During the last storm, Bedford Borough spent almost $30,000 in snow removal. That includes material costs like salt and anti-skid, overtime hours, and gas and maintenance for the plows.
Bedford Borough Manager Barbara Diehl said preparing the budget each year to account for winter storms can be difficult. She estimates $29,000 goes into salt alone. To account for overtime, she looks back over the last seven years to estimate what they’ll need.
They’re actually within their budget for salt and overtime this year, the two areas where municipalities can easily can easily go over budget in spending.
“I think after these years the past few years I actually have the budget down to where we’re right where we need to be as far as overtime and expecting different types of storms,” Diehl said.
Crews will be out salting the roads for this bout of snow an ice. There are currently no parking restrictions posted for Bedford Borough.
Conditions will be a little dangerous for driving in the overnight hours. Remember to drive slowly and safely.
