The federal government is expanding the role of some nurses in Pennsylvania. The Veterans Administration announced on Tuesday that it will grant full practice authority to 3 types of advanced practice registered nurses (APRN).

The new rule, which takes effect January 13, 2017, covers nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and clinical nurse specialists. Currently in Pennsylvania,  these advanced practice nurses must have a contract with doctors in order to diagnose and treat chronic conditions, prescribe medications and perform other treatments.

The VA’s new rule would supersede Pennsylvania’s law, and give APRNs full practice authority in VA facilities in the state.
