Interstate 80 was another road you wanted to avoid if you could. Emergency crews and tow trucks spent much of the day working to keep the road open.

What a day of snow we had. There was even a sort-of white-out at one point and there were wrecks on the interstate.

“I’m out plowing snow. I have some businesses in DuBois that I keep open and I just came home to dig this business out,” says George Simcox, who was out plowing.

Just before plowing out The Dog House near Falls Creek, Simcox rescued me when my car got stuck along the side of a hill by plowing away snow in my path.

“People get stuck all the time and that’s an awful bad curve down there and I knew that you weren”t gonna get out without any help,” says Simcox.

“He got up this morning about 3:00 in the morning because he wanted to be prepared and ready so he has all his customers are plowed out and ready for business,” says dog groomer/boarder Kathie Simcox. “My business, it’s a little slow, because I had people cancel. They don’t want to come out.”

But that doesn’t mean Kathie gets to stay inside all day.

“I am out. I shovel I have to shovel because he’s out plowing everybody,” says Kathie Simcox.

With the on-ramp to westbound I-80 blocked at Exit 97 around 10 a.m., while traffic was again moving through around 11 a.m.

“We were on the westbound lane for one and it was a truck that come down the eastbound side and wrecked,” says Gene Fritz from Falls Creek fire police.

Firefighters on a different accident by Mile 92 watched this huge UPS truck flipping over.

There were 5 separate accidents there starting around 8 a.m., including a small UPS truck going in the other direction, Falls Creek Fire Chief Mark Miller said.

“Then eventually there was another truck that came down and he went off the road,” says Fritz.

And so did one car, Miller said, adding that he even spotted one of the UPS packages stuck in a tree. He said the two UPS truck drivers were taken to DuBois with minor injuries.

Meantime, around 1:30 p.m., the sky darkened and snow started falling heavier.

“The wind was really up and blowing the snow around, but it didn’t last very long and it really does look nice,” says resident Mike Knobloch.

“This weather is crazy, from nice to you can’t see outside,” says resident Dawn Mancuso.

Some were determined to complete their errands in DuBois despite the weather.

“I don’t like it! Not for me. I like the summer,” says Mancuso.

The few-to-several inches of snow, the first major snowfall of the season, was powdery and it continued to slowly accumulate throughout the day, making it difficult for drivers.
