Two UPMC  facilities have been recognized as Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. The award for Children’s Hospital of  Pittsburgh and Western Psychiatric Institute comes from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation,  a civil rights organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The foundation bases its recognition on an annual survey evaluating inclusive policies and practices related to LGBT patients, visitors and employees. Criteria for the award include patient and employee nondiscrimination policies that specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
