The contract for more than 800 registered nurses at UPMC Altoona expires at the end of the month.

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania says more than 96% of the Registered Nurses voted Tuesday to send a strike notice to management,  if a new contract agreement isn’t reached by then.

The union says one of the main sticking points is healthcare costs for nurses. More negotiations are scheduled.

Tuesday’s vote authorizes the union’s bargaining committee to send a ten day strike notice to management, if the two sides don’t reach a tentative agreement.

Gloria Kreps from UPMC Public Relations released this statement.
“While a settlement may still be reached, should a strike occur, UPMC Altoona is fully prepared to provide high quality health services for our patients who will continue to receive the excellent care we have always provided, regardless of circumstances.”
