Built in 1944, the Johnstown Christian School hasn’t seen any major updates done since the 1990s.
“I think getting our kids prepared for college is really the purpose of these facilities,” John Huston, JCS board president said.
On Monday, the first day of school, they unveiled a project that took two years and includes a multimedia lab, STEM addition, and other updates to the arts throughout the school.
“We have excellent programs, but now we have the space to actually be excellent at them. So it’s just great to see the kids take to the new facilities.”
The school houses students in kindergarten through 12th grade. With just more than 230 students, or on average less than 20 students per grade, they say this shows how small schools can improve education with a little help from the community.
“We see so often in the public schools that they have to cut funds for arts and cut funds for different programs, but with the community coming around we were able to keep, maintain, and actually grow those programs.”
At the dedication ceremony Monday students showed their appreciation to the school and excitement for what’s to come this year.
“It’s awesome. I remember in 4th grade having band lessons in the locker room and now we have a whole wing and a whole section,” a senior student said.
After completing this $1.3 million project, the school says there is still work to be done. They’re looking to make upgrades to their gym and athletic facilities next.
