Investigators said the way the troopers handled the situation saved lives.
State police said they got a call around 1 a.m. Tuesday that the suspect, Matthew Zoglmann, was armed with a gun and threatening police. The 34-year-old was on probation and left his house in Brentwood after tampering with his ankle monitor.
Police found Zoglmann in his truck in a store parking lot on County Line Road in Champion, Pa. Investigators said he was pointing a shotgun at himself.
Police tried to negotiate with Zoglmann. He drove towards them and backed up a number of times and wouldn’t drop his shotgun. When the trooper felt threatened and the truck was nose to nose with his cruiser, the trooper fired through the truck’s windshield at Zoglmann.
Zoglmann wasn’t hit by the bullet, but got some minor scrapes from the shattered glass. Investigators said the troopers did a good job finding Zoglmann and showed a lot of restraint when they tried talking him down.
“Fortunately enough, the troopers did a good job seeing the vehicle, identifying the vehicle, understanding there was a BOLO out, matching the BOLO description up to the individual inside and engaging him in conversation, even calling him by name throughout almost the entire time of the standoff,” said Pennsylvania State Trooper Stephen Limani, the Public Information Officer.
Zoglmann is facing several charges and he’s currently being held at the Somerset County jail. The district attorney said there was an eye witness who’s helping them with the investigation.
