The NFL is golden, especially for its 50th Super Bowl, but not everyone is showing their appreciation. Super Bowl 50 statues popped up all over the city. Before residents could score a picture, two of the statues have been taken down.

The NFL and Super Bowl committee placed 10 statues around the region, each with its own pattern. Most residents enjoy the unique statues.

It wasn’t long, however, before vandals tore down the 6 x 8′ statues.

“I believe it. I mean it’s San Francisco. Basically, can’t have anything out that is at risk of that type of exposure,” San Francisco resident Carrie Mattou said.

“I’ve seen that there’s been some vandalism on them,” San Francisco resident Peggy Snyder said.

It started by changing the words “Super Bowl” to other words such as “Sup Bro” or “Superb Owl.” One vandal marked “Oops” after a statue was knocked over.

“Some people expressing their unhappiness about having this event in the city,” Snyder said.

Some residents called the statues “tacky” and “a civic celebration gone bad.”

“This was vandalized,” resident Scott Sacarenbroich said.

The statue near Alamo Park was set near the Victorian architecture homes against the San Francisco skyline, but the NFL was forced to remove it.

“It was there for about two weeks or so. So, it was nice,” resident Sacarenbroich said.

Tuesday, the golden statue was gone. Another one was removed in San Jose.

“I don’t know where it went,” Sacarenbroich said.

The one at the Civic Center Plaza remains. Residents love it, and kids who visited Tuesday enjoyed climbing and taking pictures.

“Very cool, as you can see, the kids are very excited about it,” said teacher Mike Gerhardt.

These kids aren’t aware of the previous vandalism. They, along with most of the residents in San Francisco are ready to enjoy the Super Bowl, which airs Sunday on CBS.
