Over the course of seven years students at Greater Johnstown have  raised $20,000 through their Empty Bowl event.

Bowls are hand-made by the students and are sold with soup in them to guests.  Their goal is to help fight hunger.

For this year’s event they will donate all of their proceeds to Saint Vincent De Paul, the Martha and Mary House, and the Women’s Help Center.

“It’s a simple meal of soup and bread and the bowl is a reminder that though many of our bowls are full, someone’s bowl is always empty,” 9th grade Success Academy Principal Rob Heinrich says.  “It’s a symbolic thing as well as a fundraiser.”

To go along with the event, which is happening on May 20, all of the homerooms at the high school are contributing towards a food drive that will go to help local pantries.

“It helps close to home and it helps our entire area,” senior Megan Sciffler says.

Sciffler tells us the event is organized by the school’s Key Club.  The Empty Bowls event will be held at the Art Works on May 20 from 4-7.
