Summer break is fast approaching, but the learning doesn’t have to come to a pause. Appalachia Intermediate Unit is helping students in the Altoona and Johnstown areas keep all that creativity flowing with the STEM Summer Camp.

IU8’s STEM Summer Camp provides students in grades 4-8 with a fun and educational opportunity to continue learning over summer break through two courses focused on robotics, coding and design. Students in grades 4-5 can enroll in “Dash and Dot” which combines robotics and coding. Students will learn about programming with hands-on play by completing missions, creating commands and navigating objects. Students will also be able to create music and art all through the use of programming code.

The second course, “Lego Mindstorms,” is for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. This camp will provide students with an opportunity to build, program and test a robot using the EV3 Robot Kit. Using the program app, students will also be able to test and troubleshoot their robot and revise their designs to improve robot performance. Students will demonstrate their robot’s functions on the last day of camp.

Courses are offered at two locations. The first session will take place at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center, 445 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown from June 27 through June 30. The second session will take place at Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8, 4500 6th Avenue, Altoona from August 8 through August 11. Both sessions run from 8:30am until 12:00pm each day.
