The Steelers offense got off to a slow start on Monday night, but once Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and company got into a rhythm the Redskins had no answers.
Through the air and on the ground, the Steelers rolled to a 38-16 victory. It’s the second time in just the last six years that Pittsburgh has won the season opener.
They fell behind early in the first quarter. Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins hit tight end Jordan Reed on some key third down passes but they had to settle for a pair of field goals.
Trailing 6-0 in the second quarter, the high-powered offense many expect to see from the Steelers this season started firing on all cylinders.
Facing a 4th-down-and-1, and the Redskins expecting run, Roethlisberger tosses a 29-yard touchdown pass to Brown. The aggressive play-calling continued throughout the game.
Pittsburgh’s dynamic duo connected again on a 26 yard touchdown pass, a beautiful over the shoulder catch. It was Roethlisberger’s 275th career touchdown pass, tying Vinny Testaverde for 12th all-time.
Roethlisberger finished the night 27-of-37 for 300 yards and 3 TD’s.
Give a lot of credit to the Steelers offensive line who allowed just one sack and opened up big holes for running back DeAngelo Williams.
Williams, who is the starter as LeVeon Bell serves a three-game suspension, got the job done. He finished the night with 143 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.
The Steelers defense was also stingy. Playing a lot of zone they confused Cousins forcing him into two interceptions. They also held the Redskins to just 55 yards rushing.
The Steelers return home to Heinz Field on Sunday to face the Cincinnati Bengals.
