The student-created drinking holiday known as “State Patty’s Day” was back in action over the weekend.
This year, there were fewer event alternatives offered and police did not make comments leading up to the weekend, which is different from previous years. But did the different approach help or hinder this year’s festivities?
State College and Penn State Police as well as Centre LifeLink EMS said the call volume was much higher than they anticipated.
Centre LifeLink EMS responded to 75 calls this year. 46 of those calls were alcohol related, compared to 49 total calls last year and 50 in 2014.
In all, both police departments received 507 calls for service, an increase of 38 percent over last year’s total. There were 316 total incidents this year, compared to 216 last year.
Police said the numbers are still preliminary.
