Representatives are back in session Monday, as budget talks for the next fiscal year continue. Among those discussion will be talk about funding for school projects.

School districts across the state had until Sunday to apply for PlanCon funding. As of Monday, there is a moratorium on that funding, which means any schools who apply for it now could be at risk of losing it.

State College Area School District applied last week. They’re hoping to receive $2.2-2.4 million to ease the burden on local taxpayers, as they discuss plans for renovations to three district elementary schools.

“All of these projects could happen, all of them could be shelved, depending on how things proceed over the next few months,” Ed Poprik, Director of Physical Plant, said.

PlanCon is a reimbursement program for schools with renovation and construction projects, but over the past several years, schools who have applied haven’t received any of that funding. Now, Representative Kerry Benninghoff said the state is looking to take out a $2.5 billion bond to pay those schools back and will talk about changing the program to keep that funding from drying up again.

A review committee has been set up to study the PlanCon program. They’ll have until May 15, next year, to decide how to move forward.
