PennDOT has been studying and working with state police to determine areas that would be safe enough to drive 70 miles per hour.

There are more than 1,100 miles of interstates and expressways plus 342 miles of turnpike that are currently 65 miles per hour.

In some areas, a speed limit change could only be faster by five miles per hour.  That may not mean much for cars, but one local company said it could make all the difference for its truck drivers.

Some companies like Ward Transport and Logistics have their trucks governed to drive at 67 miles per hour and they don’t plan to drive any faster.  Bill Ward said that the governed speed limit they have in place is the result of trial and error to find the best speed limit to save money on gas; their magic number is 67.

For companies like Imler’s Poultry, however, that five mile per hour difference could mean an extra 50 miles driven in a day.  That means more money for the drivers and the company can ship its product farther faster.
