The Centre County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn the public about a phone scam they’ve been hearing reports about. In a news release issued Wednesday, Sheriff Bryan Sampsel said his office has been receiving several phone calls a day, from individuals who are being scammed.
The victims say they are receiving a call from the office’s Government phone number (814-355-6803) and the scammers are telling them that they must do what they ask or they will send officers to arrest them.
The release went on to say that mostly the phone scammers are asking for personal information and bank account numbers. They even go as far as making fake court document numbers, to make the victims believe it’s a court case. Sheriff Sampsel went on to warn that in the past, phone scammers would tell victims that they owed money for taxes, and if they were not paid right away, officers would be sent to arrest them.
The release says the phone scammers all seem to have a foreign accent, and go by the names Officer John, McKinley, George, Sampsel and others. Lately, the scams seem to be mostly targeting Penn State Employees.
Sheriff Sampsel stresses: If you are receiving these calls, do not give them any personal information, bank account numbers or money orders. The Centre County Sheriff’s Office will not contact anyone and ask for personal or bank account information.
If you are unsure you are urged to contact the office at (814) 355-6803.
