School board to determine fate of local elementary school

The fate of one State College elementary school could be decided Monday night.

What to do with Corl Street Elementary School is a topic that’s been the center of some controversy among the district and parents.

The board is expected to move forward and move one step closer to a decision Monday at their regularly scheduled meeting.

The board has weighed eight options for Corl Street, Radio Park, Houserville and Lemont Elementary schools. District administration said they will recommend the board narrow that pool to four, which would eliminate the closure of Corl Street.

Superintendent Bob O’Donnell supports the option to keep Corl Street open, add additional classrooms and combine Houserville and Lemont – a project estimated to cost about $45 million.

“That would provide you with the kindergarten through fifth grade district wide capacity at 3,500 students,” O’Donnell said. “When you look at the projections, you’d be able to house that many students as we move out into the next ten years.”

O’Donnell said a recent demographic analysis predicts a growth in enrollment over the next 10 years. His preferred scenario calls for three classrooms per grade for Corl Street, Houserville and Radio Park.
