Valentine’s Day is a time for romance, but it’s bringing a very unromantic warning from the Federal Trade Commission.

The agency released a new report about scammers who find their victims through dating apps and then separate them from their money. The FTC’s newest survey finds the losses from romance scams soared from 33-million dollars in 2015 to 143-million in 2018. That’s a higher loss than any other type of scam reported to the FTC.

The Federal Trade Commission warns people to be cautious when talking to strangers online. Scammers may create fake online profiles and lavish you with attention, but then ask for money for things like medical bills and financial help.
