Last week officials closed the Nanty Glo Pool.
A sign posted at the pool announcing that it is closed, has so many folks in the community upset. The pool is closed for the season and the Department of Health says it’s due to nearly two dozen violations.
Electrical safety, rodent control, and maintaining and submitting daily records, are just a few of the violations listed by the Department of Health in the report.
“They were talking about the grate in the back, which was approved by the Department of Health years ago. I don’t know if it needs a different screen on it. We do have some people coming in to look at it,” says recreation committee secretary Marie Churilla.
Pool officials tell WTAJ that the Nanty Glo pool is about 60 year old. Nanty Glo Police say a criminal investigation is now underway, but police say it has nothing to do with the water quality.
“The issue with the bacteria in the water has been brought up, however we were tested and everything came back good,” pool volunteer Jodi Hartman says.
Now closed for the summer, pool officials and volunteers are worried.
“You get to know those kids and it’s sad. It really is. It’s the last thing they have to do all summer other than running in the streets,” Churilla explains.
It’s no secret Nanty Glo has a serious drug problem and they saw the pool as a spot for kids to stay safe.
“A lot of the children that come here on a daily basis have become part of our families,” Hartman says. “They don’t know what they’re going to do for the remainder of their summer.”
“Parents drop their kids off. They know they’re safe,” Churilla adds.
The pool will remain closed until all of the violations are corrected. Pool officials say they’re working on it. It only costs $3 per day to get into the pool, so they’re holding fundraisers and set up a Go-Fund-Me page to raise money to help fix it.
