PITTSBURGH (AP) — Police say a man beat up and threw another man onto the subway tracks in Pittsburgh because he was white.

According to a criminal complaint, witnesses told police 46-year-old Willie Hayes, who is black, told the victim he would kill him because he was white. Police say he then punched the victim and threw him onto the tracks. Witnesses told police the man then yelled: “I told you I was going to kill you.”

Police tell the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette surveillance video from the Wood Street station shows the attack.

The victim was taken to a hospital for broken bones, bruises, cuts, and facial injuries. He also had surgery for internal bleeding.

Hayes was charged Wednesday with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation over the Saturday night attack.

He has a history of assault-related charges.
