Language that could be considered offensive to people with disabilities has been removed from official documents in Pennsylvania. The State Department of Human Services announced Tuesday that the term “mental retardation” has been changed to “intellectual disability,” and the word “normalization” has been replaced by “integration.”
The move affects the language in regulations 24 chapters of licensing regulations that govern everything from intellectual disability programs to state operated facilities. to assisted living residences.
