New shelter coming for more than 150 animals

A week after 33 new puppies found a temporary home at the Bedford County Humane Society, the board and volunteers are breaking ground on a new location.

The future site of the new building is more centrally located in Bedford, 20 minutes away from the current location in Everett.

“I just can’t wait and truthfully, it’s not for me,” said treasurer Lori Copley. “I can’t wait until the animals have a nicer, healthier place to live.”

The dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the humane society will soon have a new, $800,000 home on 33 acres of land with everything they could ever need and more.

“Most shelters are dingy and dimly lit,” said humane society manager Janet Gates, “and this is gonna give us a new facility where it’s bright, where people won’t mind coming, a new area for the cats. We’ll have a special area for puppies, adult dogs. We’re gonna have rooms for expectant moms. It’s gonna be fabulous.”

Plans for the new building have been in the works for years.  They finally broke ground Friday.

“We’ve been talking and researching and fundraising for at least the past five years,” Copley said. “Our heads spin sometimes, let’s just put it that way,” she laughed.

It’s a project they said is seriously needed for their animals.

“Our shelter is old,” Gates said. “We’ve outgrown it. So we’ve waited and prayed and, you know, a long time. We need a new shelter desperately.”

Housing 70 dogs and 100 cats, it will take a lot of volunteers, donations and love to keep up and running.

“That’s why we’re doing what we do is the community,” Gates said. “The donations. I put out a cry that we’ve gotten puppies in and the donations start comin’ in.  The support of the community and our Facebook followers. We could not even imagine doing anything without the support of everyone.”
