New PA laws will crack down on opioids

Governor Tom Wolf signed a package of bills on Wednesday aimed at fighting the opioid and heroin epidemic in Pennsylvania.

The new laws are designed to strengthen the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, establish education curriculum on safe prescribing, and create more locations for the drop-off of prescription drugs.

The measures will restrict the number of pills that can be prescribed to minors, or in emergency rooms, or urgent care centers, to seven. Also physicians will have to check the prescription database every time they prescribe an opioid or a benzodiazepine.
