Community members along with the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority spent time painting a mural on the Jim Mayer Trail Monday.

The trail is in Johnstown’s Moxham neighborhood.  About a month ago WTAJ told you about the drug problem on the trail.  Residents in the area told us Monday they haven’t had any issues in recent weeks and this project will help to make the area more family-friendly.

“With all of this art you’re going to have more people out here biking, walking their dogs, and bringing their kids.  It can only be something positive for the community,” resident and volunteer Joe Warhul said.

The effort is the first of the authority’s “Friends of the Trails” funded project.  The authority says they started the “Friends of the Trails” program this past April.  Their goal is to raise money for projects, like this one, that would enhance the trails in Cambria County.  Those trails include the Jim Mayer Trail, the Path of the Flood Trail, and the Ghost Town Trail.

“We maintain the trail by cutting the grass and doing what we can, but the people who walk the trail every day are really the ones who have made this trail what it is today,” Leanna Bird, program specialist with the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority said.

Folks in the community did some of the preparation work over the weekend.  Members from the authority said The Bottleworks helped to get two artists to paint the mural.
