A new Pennsylvania law could make cancer treatment less expensive and more comfortable for some state residents. The bill, signed Friday by Governor Tom Wolf, requires insurance companies to provide the same coverage for chemotherapy in pill form, as they do for intravenous treatment.
Chemotherapy in pill form can be taken at home and has fewer side effects. Some insurance companies had placed the treatment in a special category, which required patients to pay up to $3,000 per prescription.
The new law prohibits insurance companies from placing chemo in pill form on a specialty tier or charging a co-insurance payment for the medication.
