A Trump administration memo leaked to the press has sparked outrage from the LGBTQ community.

The administration is reportedly considering a rule change that would eliminate discrimination protections for transgender people. Angelica Alvarez reported on the story.

The Trump Administration is reportedly considering a new rule which would legally define who is male and who is female, which would purposefully exclude transgender people.

“They have a lot of different things happening right now with respect to transgender,” said President Trump. “You know that as well as I do, and we’re looking at it very seriously.”

CBS News has obtained a Department of Health and Human Services memo which seeks to rewrite the legal definition of sex under Title Nine, The Federal Civil Rights Law. The change would define “a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.” That policy would wipe out Obama-era regulations, which outlawed discrimination against people who change their sexual identity.

“This is the federal government saying, we will not enforce federal civil rights laws,” said Mara Keisling, Executive Director, National Center for Transgender Equality. “Laws that I am entitled to have enforced.”

A coalition of LGBTQ and civil rights organizations held a news conference to announce they will fight the changes if the Trump Administration tries to implement them.

And then they rallied outside the White House.

“This matters for everyone,” said protester Taryn Kitchen. “If we’re able to defend the human rights of trans people, that’s everyone’s human rights being protected.”

“Trump Administration officials say they will not comment on alleged leaked memos, but this is not the first time the administration has sought to limit rights for transgender people.

President Trump tweeted in July of 2017 that the military would no longer accept transgender recruits.

A federal judge has blocked the pentagon from implementing the rule while lawsuits challenging it are making their way through the courts.

The case could end up going to the Supreme Court.

There are four different lawsuits challenging the transgender military ban and more can be expected soon if HHS pushes ahead with rules eliminating transgender protections under Title Nine.
