UPDATE: Burlington police say a toddler is in stable condition at the University of Vermont Medical Center, after falling out of a fourth floor window in her apartment on Lake Street.
“It’s quite a height to fall from and it is amazing that she suffered just a broken leg, for falling as far as she did,” says Burlington Police Lieutenant Matthew Sullivan.
Burlington police say she has a broken leg.
“I heard the mother screaming ‘call 911, call 911,’ so I ran downstairs as quick as I could,” says neighbor Steven Phillips. “I could tell her eyes were focused and she was crying, so she was responsive.”
Police say the girl is about 2 years old. They say she fell around 2:15 Wednesday afternoon. Her mother and her mother’s friend were home at the time, investigators said. The fall happened at 300 Lake Street, next to Burlington’s skate park.
“I’ve lived here over 10 years and nothing like this has ever happened before, but it could have been so much worse,” says neighbor and mother of three, Rose Wood.
Officers believe the girl was playing with a family dog in a bedroom, when she leaned up against a window and the screen popped out. They say this caused her to fall onto the grass below.
“Toddlers are fast and in the blink of an eye, they’re on top of your counter, or on the back of the couch, or on top of a table, playing in your cabinets,” says Wood. “You can’t keep an eye on them 24/7.”
“She said ‘I was sitting in the living room and it couldn’t have been three seconds she was out of my sight,” says Phillips.
Police do not suspect foul play. Burlington Police are investigating. Lt. Sullivan says he does not expect charges to be filed. It appears to be an accident. The Detective’s Bureau will conduct its own investigation as well. Police are not releasing the girl’s name, or her mother’s.
