One student has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a North Carolina high school Monday morning.

Matthews Police confirmed the student died from injuries related to the shooting after they were taken to the hospital. Another student has been taken into custody.

The shooting happened around 7:15 a.m. at Butler High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. The school was placed on lockdown just after the shooting, but the lockdown was lifted around 9 a.m.

Students at the school described a fight between two students that led up to the shooting.

“We heard a bang and we seen them starting to fight,” said Butler high school senior, Lester Henline. “All of the sudden he pulled out a pistol and everybody started running.”

The Matthews Police Department said the school resource officer was the first person to tip them off the shooting on campus. The school was immediately placed on lockdown.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released a statement at noon saying that counseling is available to any student or staff member who wishes to speak to someone about this morning’s deadly shooting.

Police said they believe this was an isolated incident, and they have secured the scene. The police are still looking for a motive.
