A new hotel in State College is getting ready to open its doors for its grand opening but another local organization is hoping to help one of its new managers excel.
While the Hyatt Place is getting its finishing touches, its new sales manager, Keriann Smith, is ready to get to work.
Smith, 23, said she admits she’s still learning to thrive in the workforce, but a mentorship program at the Chamber of Business and Industry in Centre County (CBICC) has helped her gain confidence at the office.
Lesley Kistner, the Vice President of Communications at CBICC, said “strengthening business leadership at any level, it just leads to healthier companies, businesses that are poised for growth to do new things or to take risk and kind of go in a different direction.”
Kistner said the program links aspiring young professionals to experienced leaders.
The pairs meet at least once a month for 6 months to discuss career goals and ways to succeed overall.
“I think regardless of what business you’re in there’s value to be gained from mentorship,” Kistner said.
Smith just wrapped up her program session which began in September of 2016.
She was partnered with a bank manager who was able to teach her things she didn’t learn at school.
“One advice was always give two business cards so that if someone passes you along that they still have their business card for themselves,” Smith said.
Smith said the program also is an opportunity for mentors can gain a new perspective.
“Employers grow knowing and understanding the mind of the millennial and that makes the whole workforce just easier,” Smith said.
Kistner said from hospitality to banking, the system is for anyone who wants to grow.
“Very supportive system for entrepreneurs, and business start ups and so i think just making that connection with some of the new professionals and experienced business leaders is helpful,” Kistner said.
