Man pays $1,300 fine in pennies

A Bedford resident paid a $1,300 fine with just pennies.

Stephen Ferguson owns a home on a busy street corner.

He said many commercial trucks commute in the front of his home.

“I had put blocks up in the edge of my grass to deter the trucks from gong in the yard,” Ferguson says.

In response, the township said the area was not a part of his yard, rather it is considered a right of way.

After disputes with the township and a local trucking company, Ferguson said he removed the blocks.

But the township found other rubble in its place.

“The fined me because there was a block put on the corner and I wasn’t supposed to put a block on the corner,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said he was fined a total of $1,300 and personal checks were not accepted.

He decided cash was the best option, so he paid it, right down to the last penny.

Actually he paid it all in pennies.

Ferguson said he went to the bank and withdrew 52 boxes of pennies, each holding $25 worth of pennies.

He said he sorted the change out and took his payment to the courthouse.

“Approximately 750 pounds. I had 6 five gallon buckets, full, and a two and a half gallon bucket full,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said he paid his dues, and made it count.

“I got a paper stating that i dropped the buckets of pennies off and if there was any extra in the buckets, which I’m sure there is because I didn’t trust them so I threw a little extra in,” Ferguson said.
