A university and a research center in our region are being recognized for their work on cancer. Four years ago, 2 students from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown began experiments on cancer cells at the Windber Research Institute.

They tested a hypothesis that some metal-containing complexes might treat breast cancer. One complex significantly inhibited the growth  of cancer cells, not only in breast cancer, but also in bone cancer, melanoma and lymphoma.

One  student also showed that the complex might inhibit growth factors, that promote the spread of cancer. The research was published in the Journal of Translational Medicine
