“Women United in Leadership” series coming to Penn State Altoona

Penn State Altoona is bringing in women who are leaders in their fields to talk about their experiences in the workplace.

It’s called “Women Leaders in Business and Industry: Shattering the Glass Ceiling.”

The first speakers are scheduled to take the stage Tuesday, February 26 at 6 p.m.

All students are encouraged to come to the Slep Student Center, and ask questions about developing leadership skills.

Dr. Jennifer Sabourin, Director of Student Conduct at the University, said women need support and encouragement to speak up in the workplace.

“It’s okay to feel that you deserve this or that you have a voice or you’ve worked hard for this piece. It’s okay to step up and ask for it or, you know, not necessarily demand it, but ask for it and see where it gets you and move forward in that direction,” she said.

Dr. Sabourin added these women have worked to break barriers to get where they are today.

“I think it’s helpful listening to folks that have worked through to get to a president’s level at a hospital, to get to a chancellor or dean level at a university. They’ve hit their road bumps and overcoming those is something anybody can learn from,” Sabourin said.

There will be two more events in March and April that will focus on female leaders in other professional fields, like law enforcement and criminal justice.
