A new weight limit is being put into effect this weekend on Route 160 in Wellersburg, Somerset County.
PennDOT announced the change as part of making the route safer for drivers and residents in the area. The 13-ton limit will begin January, 12, and span a nearly four-mile section of the southbound route from Roue 2015 (Glencoe Road) to the Maryland State Line in the Wellersburg Borough.
Trucks carrying loads weighing more than the limit, except local deliveries, will not be permitted to travel on Route 160 over Wellersburg mountain until further notice.
Trucks carrying loads over 13-tons are to follow a signed detour route from Berlin onto Route 219 South into Maryland and then onto I-68.
PennDOT is also evaluating the area further to determine other safety measures such as, adding a pull-off area and more warning signs.
The changes come in the wake of The Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church being destroyed by a tractor trailer this past November. It was the fifth time the church had been damaged from a crash.
