SOMERSET, Pa. (WTAJ) — Somerset County Meals On Wheels not only provides food daily to area seniors, but it also provides a relationship and connection that they might not get otherwise.
A day with Meals On Wheels begins with packing. Cold meals for lunch go into the coolers while the dinners are prepared.
Arnie McFarland is on the board of directors for Somerset County Meals On Wheels. He explained, “Monday through Friday we produce 180 meals, times two, because they can have a lunch and a dinner. Packed warm and delivered right to people’s homes.”
A delicious meal provided thanks to the help of the community. Food and money get donated from local grocery chains, community members, and larger food banks. In the summer, even local growers chip in.
McFarland said, “They’ll bring zucchini, tomatoes, and we get potatoes. It’s all fresh grown stuff here in the county.
There is no restriction on age or income to receive meals. It costs $3.85 for two meals which goes back into purchasing food.
Once everything is packed, volunteers like Russ Merryman load up and get set for a delivery. Drivers do more than just deliver meals.
Merryman explained, “I get to see that they’re okay too. I get to report back if someone doesn’t answer the door. It’s really nice.”
They get to know the people on their route. With even brief conversation, they could make someone’s day in ways beyond the food.
McFarland added, “There’s the human contact. They develop a good relationship. I think it’s a really good situation for everyone.”
