As the first ones on the scene of an emergency, Summerhill Township Volunteer firefighters said they need the right equipment. However, as a volunteer-based company, finding the money is a challenge.

“We don’t have the funds to replace these constantly,” said Brian Hendrickson, deputy chief and president.

Thanks to the Cambria County grant writer and a $3,000 grant from Lee Initiatives, the fire department was able to purchase three new AEDs.

“Like any equipment, as each year goes on, they modify it and make it better and easier to use,” said Fire Chief George Fedore.

“This will help,” Hendrickson said. “Since we’re the first ones there on any type of ambulance call, this will help us and help the community.”

Firefighters said they’re grateful to have the brand new equipment, but they hope they don’t have to use it.

“Hopefully not often. Any time it’s a cardiac arrest, that’s when it will be used,” Hendrickson said.

The fire department waited three years to get a grant to buy the equipment. Hendrickson and Fedore are encouraging other departments who are strapped for cash, to ask the county for help.

“It’s definitely needed, and like I said, it can save lives,” Hendrickson said.
