A service member who lost his life in the Vietnam War is being honored in Cambria County by having a bridge named in his honor.
Corporal Robert Sherwood Jr. died while helping load wounded comrades onto a medical helicopter in 1967, when he was 19 years old.
The change was made official at a dedication Friday morning at the American Legion Post in Cresson.
“A lot of times when they came home from war they didn’t get the recognition they deserved,” said Representative Frank Burns of the 72nd District. “And many of them of them didn’t come home at all so this is not only a tribute to the Sherwood family but to all those Vietnam Veterans, because we’re finally going to recognize all the sacrifices they and their families had to make.”
The bridge is on a section of Route 53 which passes over Route 22 in Cresson Township.
