May 31, 2017 marks the 128th anniversary of Johnstown’s great flood.
On this day in 1889 the South Fork Dam failed, killing more than 2,200 people.
Wednesday night, there will be an annual luminaria ceremony at the Johnstown Flood National Memorial to remember the flood victims. From 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm, 2,209 luminaries will be lit lining the remains of the South Fork Dam. Students at Forest Hills Elementary School wrote the names of the victims on each luminary bag.
The event is free and open to the public.
