JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Folks in the Johnstown community met Monday to celebrate and honor past and present veterans.
The annual ceremony took place at the Sandyvale Memorial Garden and included free food, inflatable children’s games, and horseback rides.
The main event was the re-enactment of the 1889 flood based on keynote speaker Dave Hurst’s narration.
President of the Sandyvale Memorial Garden, Bill Horner, says the event gives some veterans a long overdue recognition.
“What we’re doing now is making up for the mistakes of the past, people are recognizing the value of the service that has been rendered and the sacrifices that have been made. Sandyvale is a veterans cemetery. We have veterans buried here at Sandyvale from seven wars so much of what we do here is in reference and respect to our veterans,” says Horner.
The ceremony honored veterans of all conflicts and each veteran was presented a special pin.
