Two tornadoes confirmed in Jefferson County

A preliminary report by the National Weather Service confirms at least two tornadoes touched down in Jefferson County Tuesday.

The first one is being rated as  an EF-2 with wind speeds around 110 mph in Clover Township.

Experts think it traveled 4 miles and was an eighth of a mile in width.

It is the first EF-2 tornado to hit the county since 1996.

“What was unusual to see was the tombstones in the cemetery on Cemetery Road in Clover Township,” Jefferson County EMA Director Tracy Zents said. “Some of the stones were not only toppled but were tumbled four of five times. Some had the foundations lifted off the ground.”

The second tornado was just west of Brookville – in Rose Township and jumped multiple times before ending.

That storm is being rated as an EF-0 and had winds of 65 to 70 mph.

Damage from both tornadoes included downed trees and power outages.

Fortunately, only a couple homes were damaged.
